Mission 22 Memorials
There are memorials dedicated to the fallen warriors of nearly every major conflict in our country’s history. They remind us of sacrifices made by those wearing our uniform , honor those we’ve lost, and help connect civilians and soldiers. Yet, there was no national monument for those who had lost their lives in the war at home—to PTS, TBI, or MST. Mission 22 created the following memorials through the combined effort of our Veteran and civilian communities. Those like our ‘War at Home’ Memorial help us to amend the past, honor the present, and offer a different path for our Veterans.
War at Home Memorial
The War at Home Memorial is Mission 22’s latest memorial of its kind. We designed each steel plate of the memorial in the likeness of a real American Veteran who lost their battle with PTS. The 20 men and women memorialized represent those we lose every day in the war at home. In August 2021, we broke ground on the memorial’s permanent location in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, and we dedicated the memorial on June 11th, 2022.
We Remember
We Remember is a digital memorial wall to remember the names, faces, and courage of the men and women who lost the battle with PTS, TBI, or MST. These warriors may not have served in the same branch, conflict, or decade, but they all found themselves in a battle here at home.
SOARING
Soaring was the first memorial Mission 22 created. The impressive twenty-two foot tall installation contains twenty-two steel leaves. This repeated number represents the number of Veterans lost every day to suicide at the time we built the memorial. The piece is located in Nashville, Indiana, an area known for its beautiful fall leaves and a tourist destination for the artist colony tucked in the hills of Southern Indiana.
Before building the piece, the town was looking for a large-scale art installation for the center of town that represented their community. The Mission 22 team worked with the town over the course of a year, with Veterans and civilians side-by-side, to create the artwork before dedicating it in 2014.
To this day, Soaring creates social impact for Veterans’ issues to the over three million tourists that visit the area each year. A plaque at the base shows viewers how they can support and get involved with Mission 22.
